END LIVESTREAM UPDATE!

So my Final Fantasy 7 run continues, and there are a bunch of silly events that I either never noticed before, or had forgotten about.

The above strip is one such example.  Early in the game, just after Cloud’s party stowed away on Rufus’ ship heading to Costa del Sol, Rufus expresses some major frustration to Public Safety head Heidegger, chiding him for not catching Cloud & Company when he had the chance.

A day or two later, Rufus visits Rocket Town to talk to Cid about business, and Cloud is standing behind Cid, totally in Rufus’ view.  Despite his desire to have Cloud captured, Rufus doesn’t order his guards to take Cloud out.  He doesn’t even acknowledge that Cloud is there.

It’s like he never even noticed.

Sure, Palmer (a subordinate of Rufus) recognizes Cloud in Cid’s backyard, but you’d think that Rufus himself would have said something.

In another bizarre moment, while Cloud confronts Sephiroth in the Shin-Ra Mansion basement, Sephiroth asks if Cloud is “going to the reunion” or something to that effect.

Cloud’s response?  ”I don’t even know what a reunion is!”

Tifa better get him a dictionary for his birthday.

Remember a little while back when I mentioned a local restaurant was trying to hide the fact that they had received a “B” sanitation rating?  At the time, I took a picture of where they displayed their rating:

There it is, in the corner of their large set of windows, nestled behind a bundle of bamboo.  It’s still “visible” but if you’re approaching from the right of the storefront, you can’t see it at all.

To their credit, they now have an “A” after re-inspection.  I wonder where they put their rating this time?

Ain’t that something?

So this place’s strategy concerning their health rating: have a less than desirable score – hide it as much as the law allows… have a good score – show it out in the open with no obstructions.

Maybe I’m nitpicking here, but it really bothers me that they were trying to hide the score until they got a better grade.  It just seems dishonest.

I’d love to hear what the owner’s explanation is for the rating’s change of location.

He/she could’t just say they tried to hide it on purpose, right?  There’d have to be some excuse.

Roommate Jackie, by trade, is an educator.  She teaches in a school, works with kids who get behind, and provides tutoring services.  She tried to teach me something Wednesday…

She tried to teach me patty-cake.  Specifically, a game she referred to as “numbers.”

In numbers, after a simple starting clap, you are supposed to slap both hands with your partner, first backhand, then normal.  For every new round, you add additional back/front slaps, which are separated by a single normal self clap.

If it sounds complicated, it isn’t, but it is for me.

We tried it at least twenty times, and nearly all of them went like this:

Slap

Clap, cross slap, clap, cross slap, clap clap, back slap, front slap, clap, cross slap, clap, cross slap, clap clap, freeze up-

$#!^

I just couldn’t do it.  After almost every first iteration of the pattern, I’d totally brain fart and screw up, leading to obscenity and me throwing myself to the floor in frustration.

I am super good at being an adult.

END LIVESTREAM UPDATE!

Lil’ bit of love today for one of the most well-voiced characters in Borderlands, the do-it-all mechanic Scooter.  In terms of today’s comic, there’s a fun little line he spouts off when you get your first car in Borderlands 2.

Feel free to re-read the comic in his voice.

In regards to the lovely woodland creature who (innocently) found his way into the glove compartment, I figure there aren’t many friendly animals on Pandora; maybe he should have been a miniature skag-like thing.

On the other hand, Pandora must have at least a few nice looking critters, right?

Stands to reason.

So the clogged drain fiasco is coming to a close, at least partially.  Jackie was able to snake out the kitchen sink (apparently the new pipe section I installed was strong enough to handle it), so that’s one major clog checked off the list.

The bathroom sink is on another level, however.  After hours of tireless snaking Jackie was unable to reach the clog; the sink is still sporting standing water.  My mother gave me a bottle of Pequa, a drain cleaner that boasts it possesses “industrial strength.”  I poured some of that down the drain about an hour ago, and so far nothing has happened.

There’s something definitely weird about the bottle… you know how products will often have user testimonial quotes on them?  Something to the effect of:

“I use it in my own home every day!” -Cleaning Professional so and so

“I’d never leave home without it!” -Super business man guy

Quotes like that give you a sense of who might be using it, and where you’ll use it.

The quote on the Pequa bottle?  Take a look for yourself:

Gee whiz… now I feel confident.

END LIVESTREAM UPDATE!

For anyone who saw yesterday’s Kat’s Korner, or saw what I was posting on Twitter, I was not having a great day.  In recent posts, I’ve mentioned how both our bathroom and kitchen sinks have been clogged, and after pouring various drain cleaners down the tubes with no success, it was time to bring out the big guns.

I went to a hardware store, bought a canister auger (which I call a drain snake), and returned home.  Here’s a view of the blue wonder:

Despite its fearsome appearance, I was unable to get the snake past the U shape at the bottom of the first pipe.

Whatever, I figured, lemme try the kitchen.

I laid out a large plastic bag on the floor which served as a platform on which I placed the contents of the kitchen sink.  Each item (dishes, pots, etc.) had been sitting in murky standing water for a while, and were all pretty slimy.

Great stuff right there.

Even though the sink was now devoid of tableware, it was half full of gross water.  I guided the snake down the drain, turned the handle a few times and

shhhhhhhhhhhh

The water was going down the drain, just like that!  Awesome!

After the initial excitement passed, however, I realized that the sound of the water was… louder than normal.

Louder?

Oh $#^%

Sure enough, when I opened the cabinet below, the gallon of gross water that had previously been in the sink was now shooting out of the pipe, which was sporting a nifty new hole.

I’d like to tell you that I exercised quick thinking and grabbed a pot to catch the vile fluid, but I didn’t.  Like a frightened deer, I stood still and… just watched.

I dried up the area with some towels and removed the broken section of pipe.

Just great.

It was now time for a trip to Home Depot.  Walking around holding the broken pipe like a dummy, I eventually found the right replacement, but needed a few inches to be cut off.

I asked a Home Depot associate where the cutting station was.

“Oh,” he said, “it’s just down the hall.”

Down the hall I met another associate and asked if he could cut the new pipe for me.

“You can get a hacksaw, only five bucks!” he said.

“You don’t offer cutting services?”

“Nope,” he responded.

Now, I’ve been to many a Home Depot before, and when buying stuff like chains, pipes, wood, etc, they would always have a cutting station to get you the desired length.

Maybe this employee was new, so I found a third guy to ask.

“Oh, we’re not allowed to cut anything in the building,” he told me with a smile.

What?!  Home Depot isn’t allowed to cut anything inside their store?  It’s Home Depot, a hardware store!

I thanked the guy, bought the pipe, and returned home.  Jackie and I have a hacksaw (for which she knitted a cozy), so cutting the pipe wouldn’t be too much of a hassle.

Unless you’re puny little me and it takes forever.

Once it cut to the right size (and brass powder was spread all over the floor), I put the new pipe in place, fastened it at the sink end, and then started tightening the bolt at the other end when…

The bolt broke into a million pieces.  It must have been really rusty or something.

I think I’m gonna stop this story right here.  In the immediate moments after the bolt broke, I had a minor freakout and was ready to give up and toss all the pipes out the window.

Since that time, I was able to properly replace the pipe under the sink, but was not able to fix the drainage problem.

After everything that happened yesterday, all I accomplished was brining us back to exactly the same problem we had the day before.

In other words, I accomplished nothing.

Fun day.
