Corpse Run 892: Higitus Figitus
The shine is definitely starting to wear off a bit on Dragon Quest XI.
Am I still having fun? Sure.
Is the game starting to feel like a bit of a chore with random filler and little, almost TV show esque episode side plots? Yes.
Am I going to keep playing? Of course…
…but geeeeeeeeeze is it starting to feel like a random mix of other IPs.
The first JRPG with a well paced and impactful narrative might just make infinite money at the going rate.
There’s really not much you can do in that kind of setting that won’t draw comparison to something else. It happens even in games with the most original settings. As if that wasn’t enough of a problem, Dragon Quest can’t really just sit back and do its own thing, either… since every other JRPG is aping their formula, it’s very easy for every aspect of the game to seem generic in comparison.
All that said, the episodic nature of some Dragon Quest games is kind of annoying. I don’t know if that’s the case with XI, since I’ve been waiting for it to come to Switch (for… friggin… three years now…), but I’m not a fan of RPGs randomly sending you from place to place and every area having its own little self-contained story that doesn’t further the plot any. That was a big problem for me in Dragon Quest IX and Golden Sun: Dark Dawn. I hope XI isn’t too much like that.
