Corpse Run 717: OverBotched
So yeah, this happened at the start of the current Overwatch competitive season. One of the guys in my group of friends got a bronze rank after being silver last season and now he can’t play with a few of us.
Obviously, that kind of stinks.
I get the need to have proper competitive balance and that if there’s a large enough skill rating gap between players they shouldn’t be in the same comp match, but let’s be real here…
…there’s very little difference between a bronze and plat player in my opinion. I think anyone who says otherwise is kidding themselves. Sure there might be some differences in mechanical proficiency or positioning, but bronze through plat is filled with average players at best.
There is no one so skilled in that range that would ruin a competitive game.
Blizzard plz.
I was Top500 in Season 1, Diamond Season 2, GM Season 3 and Diamond Season 4. In season 5 I’m Diamond and Climbing.
I honestly think you’re totally wrong – I’ve played plat and even gold games on friends accounts and the difference in mechanical skill and aim is colossal. I also have bronze friends and when I spectate their gameplay it really is an exercise in screaming at the screen about obvious gmaeplay mechanics that are being totally ignored.
The real skill compression in overwatch occurs at the top, where the games “soft skill ceiling” starts really evening out the differences between players and making it very difficult to do more than the hero you’re playing as, is really intended to do.
There’s very little way to set yourself apart at the top of overwatch – not like quake, where aim is one piece of a puzzle that also includes movement, item timing, and overall strategy on an individual level.
I think I’ll have to defer to you as you’re a much better player than I am, but from my layman’s view of competitive and having previously watched my friend who got placed in bronze play, I don’t feel like there is a major difference between us.
You mean that Overwatch is a much more friendship-destroyer than Mario Party?!
Whaaaaaaaaat?!
Nawwwwww, not a friendship destroyer. We’re just less likely to play if we can’t all play together.
The one season I tried doing my placement matches, there was one guy so toxic that I just stopped trying competitive.
