Corpse Run 736: Unfamiliar ceiling
First things first: the Death Note Netflix movie isn’t as bad as everyone is making it out to be.
Second things second: the Death Note Netflix movie is bad.
Third things third: I have no idea who this movie was made for, and that is why (in my opinion) it falls flat.
Here’s what I’m sure of: you can’t fit 37 episodes of content into an hour and a half movie. So… you need to change things. If you’re going to change things, you need to change all the things.
I thought exactly the same thing! I’m fine with them making changes, as all adaptations do it and it would be impossible to adapt a 37-episode series into a movie without those changes and omissions.
BUT
BUUUUUUUUT
If you’re going to make changes as drastic as the entire dynamic of the characters and what they represent, just don’t do that and make an original story! It would have been so much more tolerable, even if it turned out to be a mediocre movie, if they just took the premise of shinigami and a Death Note and applied it to an entirely new set of characters. If you’re going to make changes, make HUGE changes, otherwise you’re just going to piss off old fans.
For what it’s worth, I the actor who played L did the best he could with mediocre writing. Not much could go wrong with Willem Dafoe, either. Watari and Light’s dad were competently acted.
Light Turner (ugh) and Mia (UGH) were AWFUL, though. I can’t stand to see a version of Light that’s so stupid and pathetic, and while Misa light (tee hee) pulled off psychotic well, the relationship dynamic was so warped from the original that it would be comical if it wasn’t so sad. And I felt like I was watching a bad Saturday morning cartoon with that last scheme Light pulled, it broke so many established rules it’s not even funny.
I’d give it a solid 4/10. Some good acting mixed with a lot of bad acting, poor writing throughout, needlessly confusing and impossible plot, but fairly entertaining as far as bad movies go.
Thanks for giving me a platform to air my grievances, it’s been building up for a couple of days.
That movie is so bad it makes me appreciate Netflix’s iron fist. The movie is straight awful.
As a die hard fan of both the Manga and the Anime, I decided to pass on watching the movie. There was far too much content for there to be a single movie on it
I just watched the movie like two days ago, and it really made me think of how bad Twilight was. I don’t know why, maybe it was the relationship aspect of it. The actor who played L did pretty well, though I really wanted him to answer the phone just once the way L traditionally did. It would have been so awesome. I love that they kept Ryuk’s quote to the end “Humans are so interesting!” . I did actually enjoy watching it, and for what it’s worth, how Light reacted to Ryuk’s first reveal was actually not far off how you know he wanted to react in the anime if he had enough room to run.
You’re right, the Death Note movie isn’t as bad as everyone says it is…It’s worse. Much worse. It was blatantly obvious that it was impossible to cram such an epic story into an hour and a half but they did it anyway because money.
It felt like they kept all the marketable names and images then dumbed down what was left of the story so it would sell.
