The whole situation with Blizzard is bananas and they seem to have taken a course of action with the goal of aggravating every fan not located in China. Blizzcon is coming up and I can only imagine the protests and nonsense that is going on. The idea that it is controversial to take the position that freedom of speech is a good thing is nuts. Let people support freedom wherever that may be.
I understand the concept that an entertainment company might not want to take political stances or having their players use their platform for political speech, but we are all human and defending human rights should not be political, it should be a given.
Blizzard takes and supports political stances ALL THE TIME, especially when it reinforces their branding. And that’s fine. But to suggest that they DON’T and then think we’re going to believe them that their desire to appease their Chinese investors ISN’T a motivation is an insult to say the least. I’d have a lot more respect for them if they just admitted the latter, that’s at least understandable.
That their public response to this has been theorized as being translated from mandarin is especially hilarious. It’s like they think in the modern era several billion people or so with internet connections and access to the sum total of human knowledge aren’t going to figure out their fabrications.
