Corpse Run 659: False Equivalency
Disclaimer: Politics are boring and annoying
Ok, so the election is tomorrow and holy moley I’m not a fan of how the polls have been tightening over the last couple of weeks. For the most part every projection has Clinton with somewhere between and 80%-95% chance of winning, but FiveThirtyEight (at the time of this writing) has her at a 65.5% chance.
Personally, I don’t care what someone individual politics are. I grew up in a conservative household and became a liberal later on, so I have some kind of understanding on where the people who disagree with me politically are coming from.
That said, I do not understand where Trump supporters are coming from:
- This a a guy who says his business credentials qualify him to turn the county around economically, but refuses to release his tax returns which would actually disclose his financial background.
- This is a guy who began his campaign by vilifying our south neighboring country calling their people drug dealers and rapists.
- This is a guy who deals with major political events like debates with no apparent preparation.
- This is a guy who gets into petty squabbles with random people on twitter.
- This is a guy who is upset over his portrayal on Saturday Night Live and says the show should be shut down.
- This is a guy who says that “grab them by the pussy” is locker room talk.
- This is a guy who claims that he know more about ISIS than the US Military.
- This is a guy who says that it’s dumb to announce attacks, completely oblivious that doing so is crucial to reducing civilian casualties and saving lives.
- This is a guy who mocked a Gold Star family, claiming that their religious beliefs kept the mother of a dead soldier from speaking.
- This is a guy who lost a billion dollars in an economic boom and thinks he is good at business.
- This is a guy who has had numerous bankruptcies and failed casinos.
- Seriously, how does a casino lose money? Customers go in there fully aware that they are likely to lose money.
- This is a guy who said that a judge born in the USA was biased because of his Mexican heritage.
- This is a guy whose “university” is the subject of two class action lawsuits for fraud.
- This is a guy who is incapable of understanding that the people who weren’t born with a silver spoon in their mouths are people too. His comments on receiving a “small” million dollar loan from his father show just how out of touch he is.
- This is a guy who said that countries should have more nuclear weapons.
- This is a guy who says that we should “bomb the shit out of [our enemies].”
- This is a guy who started a mortgage company in two thousand six.
- This is a guy who has made sexual comments about his children, about minors, about models, about anyone with two x chromosomes really.
- This is a guy so mentally unstable he couldn’t resist bringing up Rosie O’Donnel in a presidential debate.
- This is a guy who tweets in the middle of the night about a sex tape of a former miss universe.
- This is a guy who claims that he might not accept the results of the election.
- This is a guy who said he’d cover the legal costs of someone who sucker punched a protester at one of his events.
- This is a guy who literally contradicts himself every day and claims he never made statements that he literally made while being recorded.
This is a guy so heinous, so reprehensible, so disgusting that even if he loses the election, the country has already suffered immensely due to the fact that he made it this far.
He has climbed as high as he has by stirring up the racist portion of the country that has been dormant for a long time. He has given them a voice, he has legitimized their feelings by dragging them within an inch of the whitehouse.
Donald Trump is so immensely unqualified for the job, not just as a politician, but as a human being.
I definitely understand that Hillary Clinton is not a saint. I voted for Bernie in the primary and was definitely bummed out that he didn’t win. That said, Clinton’s problems and scandals are nothing when compared to that of Trump’s.
It’s the difference between a paper cut and a full-body degloving.
So if your reason for not voting for her has anything to do with her publicized scandals, then you have fallen victim to the false equivalency ride that the media has taken you on.
Like the last time I posted something kind of political, I recognized that this might annoy a portion of you guys. Obviously I like to keep this place as politics free as possible and want to spend time poking fun at games and making fun of myself.
However, this election is different. This election matters because one of the people running is the most unqualified candidate in history.
Four years ago I wanted Obama to win, sure, but I wasn’t afraid that Mitt Romney would destroy the nation if he won. With Trump however, I fear that fundamental institution of the country will suffer so greatly that we might be talking about the past sixty years as the last time America was a great place to live.
So…
…go vote.
It matters who you vote for if you’re in a swing state, otherwise your vote is 100% worthless due to the way elections work in this country. Obviously any rational person will recognize that Hillary is a better choice than Trump, but you also have to realize that unless you live in a swing state, adding your vote to her count is only going to be propping up her policies. If you support her policies, by all means, vote for her, but people who support Bernie’s policies don’t overlap much with people who support Hillary’s policies. If you live in a state like New York or California, your state is going to go to Hillary no matter what happens, so you might as well vote for whoever is closest to your package of views, and for Bernie supporters, that happens to be Jill Stein.
I would absolutely be voting for Hillary if the popular vote was what got a president elected, but it’s not. I live in Maine, which is going to go to Hillary. Even if it wasn’t, my vote means far less here than in almost any other state, since we have the fewest electoral votes. So I’m going to add to the popular vote count of Jill Stein in the hopes that we can push towards the 5% threshold needed to get the Green Party public funding for elections, and to show support for a package of policies that most closely mirror my own. In fact, I would argue that voting third party is the only way your vote will have impact at all if you’re voting in a swing state, since a vote for a major party will be lost in a sea of like votes. And if Hillary wins in a landslide, politicians ten years in the future can look back at the popular vote count of this election and say “Ah, the American people clearly want war, oligarchy, and regressive healthcare and college plans.”
So yes, ideally, Hillary will win, but hopefully by a small margin. And I hope all of Bernie’s supporters join him in fighting tooth and nail against her as soon as she’s in office.
For me this election is less about propping up Clinton and more about sending a resounding message that people like Trump have no place in the future of American political discourse.
Racism should not be given a voice. Sexism should not be given a voice. Trump has climbed as far as he has by cultivating hatred and fear similar to Hitler’s own rise to power.
While I certainly don’t agree with Clinton on everything, I agree with enough that I’d be voting for her regardless of how awful Trump has been. I supported Bernie in the primary and donated to him, so I obviously care about the platform he put forward. With that in mind, I feel as though if I voted for anyone other than Clinton I’d be cutting off my nose to spite my face.
Regarding the swing state issue I agree with you to a point. Sure, when it comes to electing the President essentially only the swing states matter… but there are downballot elections happening too. Voting always matters.
As for Jill Stein, her comments on vaccinations alone make be believe she is unqualified to be president. So if you’re interested in someone who is at the very least spreading misinformation about vaccinations and has never held meaningful public office in their life for the most powerful position in the country, you may as well vote for Trump.
That said, if you would like to vote for Stein, I fully encourage you to do so. Our country only works when everyone has a say in the process. So… go vote!
To keep it short: Both of them are probably among the worst candidates in the US’ history. Doesn’t matter which of these clowns win, there’s a good chance they’ll end up somehow making other presidents, like George W. Bush, look good.
This is more or less the topic of the comic above. While I certainly agree that I’m not a huge fan of either choice, equating the two is doing a disservice. No matter how bad someone might think Clinton is, Trump is multiple orders of magnitude worse.
Believe it or not, it’s actually surprisingly easy for casinos to lose money. They make their big profits from drinks and the slot machines, because everything else has an extremely small profit margin. It’s to do with statistics. Look at it this way: a roulette wheel has 36 bettable different numbers. The odds are calculated as if those were the only numbers on the wheel. If the ball lands on one of the 0s, house wins. That is the casino’s profit margin. It’s…actually quite small, even though the odds of an individual player winning are themselves just as tiny.
The roulette example is just one game of many; slot machines and most table games will completely bleed patrons dry.
…but let’s use the roulette example anyway. As you stated, there is a baked in statistical advantage to the house. Over anything other than a minuscule amount of time, the house *always* wins.
The only way for a casino to lose money is though mismanagement.
Hey now, you forgot the rape charges he’s dealing with/has court on in December…the charges involving a 13-year old (at the time)
Gah, I hate having to even know that’s something that’s going on :-/
But yeah, agree with pretty much everything you stated up there. Social media has become a minefield with all this stuff (best thing that managed to not be overly preachy I read that a friend said: “if Clinton wins, he’ll applaud those friends who voted 3rd party for voting their conscious/getting green in the future elections [that 5% thing] but if trump wins they get the blame” [or something to that effect])
Well, that was my most political post of this election season (anywhere).
My condolences
Well, that’s the world fucked then…
As a French, I’m sorry for you…
It’s a mad world…

When the election was over I was in my room working on some work for a business class I do, my friend texted me ‘It’s over. Trump won.’ I literally didn’t bat an eye, being Australian we deal with a lot of crazy shit in my homeland (insane animals that would fight you, massive poisoness snakes you capture or lop the heads off, toxic flesh rotting spiders and heat like you live in an oven) yet I was partially disturbed at how a man- human like Trump had the opportunity for power. I mean, I have a younger brother who is a violent person who is incredibly brash, yet he appears as a saint compared to Trump’s view, policies, his very nature is erratic and contradictory. My dear friend literally said ‘I’d bail this reality if I could.’ I agreed whole heartedly, I would rather be Bill Cipher’s slave than deal with people like Trump. My own nation has had more than five elected heads of government (Prime Minister) in as many years, the whole nation- the world is just getting worse and worse by the day. On regard to nuclear weapons… how many people realize that Australia has the last if only weaponised neutrino bomb in the world? Neutrinos go through anything, while not as long lasting as radiation- neutron bombs destroy organic life.
Your last paragraph is literally what was said by CNN, MSNBC, The Washington Post, etc. Its obvious what your media sources were, so its obvious that you have a bias against Trump, which is just all the more wrong considering that the beginning of your strip feigns equal media coverage between the two candidates, which is obviously a lie, even by your standards since the media that you follow were on a 24/7 trump bashing spree all year long, and even over a month after the election, are still on a trump bashing spree. Yet, you really think it was equal coverage? yeah right…Dude, stay away from politics please and just poke fun at video games.
It’s scary as fuck. We wound up with Hitler. It’s only getting worse.
At this point, I’m pretty sure anybody who doesn’t see his lies is dangerously delusional. And it takes a LOT to make me give up on anybody.
