I feel like it’s been a while since I had a slightly zany strip, sometimes it’s absolutely necessary.

Like right now, when just after the SOPA/PIPA blackout protests take place the government decides to take Megaupload down.  Now, I’m not going to say that MU was totally without fault, but I’ll reiterate what has been said the last few days about the decision:

Taking down Megaupload for people using it illegally is just as nutty as shutting down Ford or GMC or Mitsubishi because a driver might break traffic laws.  It’s just silly.

Now, not all is lost: SOPA and PIPA have been (at the time of this writing, anyways) shelved.  Neat-o! Unfortunately, there are two new pieces of political nonsense that are much worse for the internet coming up on the horizon.

First up is H.R. 1981, the “Protecting Children from Internet Pornographers Act of 2011,” which forces ISPs to track everything you do on your computer, and then present that information to the government at any time.  This bill would effectively kill anonymity and the right to privacy on the internet, all under the guise of protecting children.  Who is the sponsor of this asinine legislation?  Why, none other than Lamar Smith, the same buffoon who sponsored SOPA.

I feel like Mr. Smith’s consistent disregard for our rights and inability to educate himself about the workings of the internet has made him a threat to our freedom.  Unfortunately, I don’t live in Texas and can’t vote him out of office, but maybe I can help by pointing out just how insane this man is.

After that we have ACTA, which pisses me off so much that I don’t want to talk about it.  Here’s a link to a short video that explains it.

Maybe ten, twenty, thirty years down the road something like today’s comic strip wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility.  Except for, you know, shooting the puppy.  Then again, who knows?

What I would like to say, however, is a quick congratulations to Richard and Shawn, who are pretty big Giants fans that were beyond thrilled to watch their team do what my Jets seem incapable of, make the Superbowl.  Good luck guys!
