Corpse Run 405: The littlest molehill
LIVESTREAM UPDATE:
The next stream will be… sometime next week! Hey livestream regulars, remember that one guy who’d randomly appear and make proclamations about the greatness of Tim Tebow? He’s my old college roommate, Chris, and he’s coming to the city this weekend!
Woooooo!
Considering that this will be the first time in a long time he’s flown in from LA (or somewhere near there… I think he lives in LA), I’ll be holding off the next stream until the following Friday. Sorry about that!
END LIVESTREAM UPDATE!
Shortly before last Friday’s stream, I had some spare time and decided to play more Civ 5. While I totally love the game, there seem to be a number of AI flaws, especially when nations are at war.
Sweden arbitrarily decided that I was dangerous and declared war on me. I solely played defense; not once did I step foot into Gustavus’s country, nor did I even send ships into his waters. After a short while, he made a peace offering and it was over.
Just as the peace treaty expired, roughly four or five countries denounced me, declaring that I was a warmonger and picking on weaker nations.
Suleiman of the Ottomans then declared war. Then Polynesia. Then Sweden again.
Three countries tried to do me in, but I again kept to a defensive strategy and eventually made peace with all of them.
…but then the peace treaties expired, and suddenly I was denounced again.
I am of the opinion that if I’m attacked, fighting back should not be viewed as picking on weaker nations.
Furthermore, the territory I gained as a result of the conflicts were offered to me by the civs that initially attacked.
I accepted their peace offerings.
I’m such a war criminal.
Quick final note: over the weekend I went to Mocca Fest with Jackie and Lima! Normally, I never buy anything at these conventions, but Maki from Sci-ence and Sufficiently Remarkable had a booth! I first saw him on Penny Arcade’s comic reality show, Strip Search, and he’s totally awesome!
Naturally I had to buy something from him, so I got one of his blemmyes doodles:
I love it!
As much as I love Civ 5, its the AI that always makes me not finish a game. Try and make allies and then half the civilised world declares war on you cause your in the lead of in just 1 of the scoring categories (usually wounders or technology).
The current game I’m in initially was all about culture, but then I needed to build up military, then science, then military again.
I just want my opera houses and museums! Why can’t we all get along?!
With my own experience in this regard, there is only one way to deal with Civ 5 AI.
To-tall-y annihilation.
Don´t get me wrong I´m a peaceful guy. But if you get bugged for every kind of self preservation you have to flip sometimes…..and destroy cultures.
I get the feeling that I’ve been wasting time on non-military units; at one point or another I’ve been at war with every civ on the map.
If I can’t wow them with my amphitheaters, I’ll crush them with my navy!
Well, other nations would be afraid of you if you were a couple eras or so ahead of them, which would lead them to thinking you are too dangerous for the stability if peace.
Dang jelly civs!
Yay, Civ comics!
I think part of this is a result of the diplomacy system, which is messed up. As I remember it, AIs are getting angry for things like, developing land that’s uninhabited, but they wanted to develop or having borders right next to theirs. Peaceful co-existence is only possible if you lavish them with one sided treaties or gifts. Ultimately, all of my efforts to win culturally or diplomatically are thwarted by lesser nations getting jealous and angry that I’m not giving them goodies.
Unfortunately the same AI system seems to have been implemented in the real world. ED: The Palestinians trying to get warcrimes charged against Israel for taking out military targets after Hamas fired thousands of Rockets into Israeli civillian areas, weird coincidence that games imitate life sometimes.
Also I have no idea what date format you’re using, only that this was posted in 2014 and I have no idea if it was in spring or summer.
Great sharing insight.. Thank you so much
